Success Stories

I have been involved in the Broadening Horizons program since 2015 as a teacher, a program leader and a member of the PAG. I have worked with different industry partners and in 2019 developed the program from inception at a Primary School level.

Broadening the Horizons for students

The Broadening Horizons program helps students to develop skills that are essential for success in the real world, such as problem-solving and communication. In doing so, we can best prepare them for their future careers.

Why does program the exist?

The program was established in response to the Regional Education Jobs and Skills Plan, 2012-2014 which released data to suggest the school retention rates for years 7-12 in the Gippsland Region were much lower than the Victorian state average.

We all want all students to grow up and thrive in a world where they are equipped with the skills necessary for success. That is why we need programs like Broadening Horizons-a co-designed by community leaders, government officials & industry representatives that provides high quality exposure of work experience paired alongside education providers so youth have an opportunity at becoming successful adults who can compete globally.

The program works with schools and industry to:

  • Establish partnerships between schools and local industry that are based on mutual benefit

  • Planning and delivery of our innovative learning model based on a co-design and co-facilitation approach to student learning

  • Provide meaningful, ongoing workplace-linked learning opportunities and develops 21st-century skills;

  • Engage families and the broader community in the student’s learning and aspirations

Brighter Futures

The program aims to support industry outcomes including:

  • Accessing new ideas and potential solutions to industry problems.

  • Enabling the industry to contribute to the well-being of the local community through partnerships with local schools, exposing the next generation of workers to future work opportunities in Gippsland.

  • Expanding the pool of local resources available to support current and future emerging industries – keeping more jobs local.
